I'm a plein air artist who occasionally needs to work sitting down, and have found that the usual camp stools are fiercesomely uncomfortable--and also too large to fit in my huge backpack along with all my other painting equipment. The Coleman Event Stool is sturdy and folds up amazingly small! The only drawback was its initial set-up. When I first put it together, the tension of the metal supports was so tight that I truly thought the two metal "straps" that clip it together were too small--that the wrong parts had been attached! I wrestled with that thing--finally sent an e-mail to Coleman--and of course within seconds afterward managed the set-up. (Cancelled distress e-mail to Coleman).

My suggestion for anyone without the arm strength of Superman, is to (duh!) put in on the floor sideways and then lean down on it. It won't break or tear, which had been my fear. Somehow those two metal straps do connect! And from then on, the set-up process gets easier. It is... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy and inexpensive, April 11, 2012

I needed several small stools for use in Haiti but they had to be very compact and reasonably light. These fit the bill. Amazon was the cheapest place for them. Brand name, made by Coleman. Rated at 175 pounds but tested fine at 220 pounds. Only caution is that seat height is 13 inches which is a bit low. Normal chair is 18 inches high. This item is so small and easily fits within a backpack.

I have a 1950's version of this design constructed of chains instead of straps and a slightly better grade of steal, but now that I think about it, everything was constructed tougher back then. This is a perfect stool for backpacking or to keep in the back of your vehicle. Do NOT plan on sitting on this for long periods of time, although it is fairly comfortable for what it is. It is a small stool that is fairly close to the ground and I definitely wouldn't advise sitting on it if you're over 200 pounds. It might wind up breaking and become lodged somewhere uncomfortable... if you know what I mean. ; ) Bonus: The stool even comes with it's own streamlined carrying bag. Kind of cool.
