I never did like bringing it inside anyway, the gas is under pressure and although it put out a lot of light, it's probably better suited for outdoor use.So I figured with modern LED technology that there had to be a good replacement. I looked at several Coleman LED lanterns and the CPX6 seemed to have the best light output (200 lumens on high) with the best battery life (claimed 155 hours on low on one set of D cells). That's a lot more light and about 10 times more life than the AA-cell Coleman lanterns I found. The CPX6 isn't really a backpack lightweight type, but it's small enough to store in the kitchen or closet. It seems well made (plastic) and it really does put out about the same amount of light as the small gas lantern I have -- but much safer. The light is even and goes out all 4 sides of the lantern. I set it aside when I got home and was so surprised I needed it during a power outage just a few hours later. It was very easy to load the batteries in the bottom (though I needed an additional flashlight to figure out the positive and negative ends of the battery). It turns on and off easily, has two brightnesses, which are pretty close - sort of bright and brighter. 4 D batteries do last a long time, and thankfully the power came back on about 4 hours later, but in the mean time we had plenty of light. The light is that white/blue light, so candles give much prettier light, but you can read by this light and it is easy to carry around. The strap is also adjustable so you can hang this in a variety of positions. I hope I never need to try any of them LOL. I ended up ordering the rechargeable pack for $19.95, since someone pointed out D batteries are pricey. I will probably never need... It's lighter in weight than the larger lanterns because it only uses four D size batteries, and it takes up less space.The strap system is unique. I can use it as a handle or I can strap it to the canopy. No more hunting for ropes or hooks. The strap system has a Velcro closure and can go above or behind the lantern for different configurations, hanging from a tree or strapped to it. This lantern doesn't give off as much light as my larger Coleman Rugged Battery Powered Lantern (Family Size), but that's to be expected. It gives off enough to illuminate a small tent. If you need more light, buy more of these or spring for the larger lantern. Propane and butane lanterns are another alternative, but I don't want to burn those in my tent. |
