Later on when I was hiking and camping, especially in the different national parks in Utah, a few decent flashlights were also potential life savers. The sun sets really fast - it's like a light switch. On a moonless night it was impossible to see anything. Since then, I've always kept on the cutting edge of flashlights. It used to be Krypton bulbs and the Maglight was the standard. Streamlight, Maglight and others were the bright-light main-stream leaders. Times have changed. When the first LED's came out, I purchased a few - they still work, but are only a fraction of the power of this new generation of Cree LED's. Not perfect, though.If you want to hike at night, you need a good headlamp {Petzl Tactikka is my personal choice) and a small, bright flashlight to spot check your surroundings. Trust me, you will get freaked out when your headlight shows glowing eyes looking at you but does not throw enough light to see what it is. Most likely a deer, but you want to know for sure. This is the best small flashlight for that purpose that I have found so far. PROS: Small. Bright. Good color rendition. Uses standard AAA batteries (3) CONS: No lanyard, and no good way to attach a string to it. I resorted to a hose clamp to attach a cord to it, so I could attach it to the shoulder strap of my backpack. Always right there if I need it. No momentary switch, just on and off. No red light. Lately, there has been a population explosion of skunks in the area, and from what I can tell, possibly some rabid ones. On several occasions this year, we've come very close to getting sprayed by some of these fearless (and presumably rabid) skunks that do not seem to want to run away at close proximity! Enter the need for an effective pocket light. I needed one with a super strong beam that can illuminate the sidewalk, street, and lawns in front of us while taking Fido for a spin in the dark. And one that can scare skunks away. This Coleman seems to more than do the trick, and it's beam is quite powerful and illuminating, even at a good distance.
