When you are in the midst of a power failure, candles just don't cut it. They are romantic but the amount of light they emit doesn't let you get much done never mind the fire hazards.Most everyone remembers a camping experience that included a Coleman Lantern. For years I have had one in my basement that was missing the mantles. After the last power failure I was determined to get mine working, all I needed to do was replace mantles. I had never replaced a mantle, so when mine arrived I looked in horror, they were huge and didn't much look like I remembered. I checked to make sure that I'd ordered the correct size. The replacements are simple to attach. I took my lamp outside to light it and whoosh the mantles went up in flame. Scared the heck out of me until I realized that once they had flamed up what remained was the smaller almost gossamer mantles that I remembered. I now have the perfect lantern for those occasional power outages. Who knows... On a lark, I picked up an old Coleman 220 lantern and a propane Coleman lantern. It needed new mantles. There's a lot of chinese aftermarket ones, but for the cost difference it's not worth saving a few pennies when you can get these originals. Despite being frail once burned off, they withstand a fair amount of jostling and rough handling with one caveat -- don't touch them if you manipulate the glass surround on the lantern.It takes a little fiddling with the string to get these installed, but don't waste your money on the elastic band ones. They are nearly double the cost and will only save you a minute or two. To install them, scrunch the string tight down then loosen it just enough to fit over the flame holes on your lantern. Then wrap the string tightly and just put a little slip knot into them. The string binds to itself. You don't have to burn them off with a match if you don't want to, but I would not light the lantern with the top cover installed or... These standard Coleman mantels are perfect... the original mantle designed for most lanterns, easy to tie and very bright burning.Works with both traditional types of lanterns (gas or propane), and there's no substitute for the real thing when it comes to lanterns. Battery operated versions are useful for some situations, but nothing gives off the light output of a classic mantle-burning lantern. I continue to use it for camping, neighborhood parties, power outages, etc. and this lantern can light up an entire room, outdoor party tent or campsite. Great price, great quality... highly recommended. |
